Our Green Schools Initiative is based for future prospective. We aim to provide information, training, support, and policy advocacy to school Green Teams that will engage students in taking actions to reduce the environmental footprints of their schools. Our approach brings parents, educators and decision-makers at common environmental feelings and sharing of opinions to take action to integrate green facilities and environmental education into their schools once they have access to persuasive information and have been given the tools and training to easily implement our initiatives. We are in initial phase of developing knowledge sharing with schools on global environmental problems and e-waste issues as core area to be recognized by school. Next phase will involve the parent community to join our initiative and forward their inputs for implementation actions at school level. Last phase of our program includes policy maker sharing their views on today’s world and nature.
Approach to Schools:
It involves three rounds of sensitization and brainstorming meetings with the core team members of the organisation while deciding to select the schools to run our green school program. Selected Schools are firstly sent a formal Letter of Request for half an hour Awareness Campaign on e-waste to the head of the institution. After a week, every school is visited by core team members of the organization for their permission and appointment of date and time for the Campaign. In many schools we approached teachers who are active on environmental issues. Many of the schools are the part of clean India campaign, and so they were very much supportive to our E-Swachh Bharat campaign. After fixing dates and time with each school, the core team members of the organizations takes the Campaign forward. All the volunteers of the organization are trained and informed on the Awareness Material provided by CURE. E-waste Awareness programme details, Pamphlets, pledge form are our materials used during the presentation. We provide pamphlets cum pledge Forms, to illustrate the problems of e-waste and persuade the children to take it to their home and give it to their parents.
What we do at school: We conduct integrated activity at school which is of 30 minutes and followed by Quiz session, during the session we generally ask questions related to E-waste. We provide e- waste fact sheet cum pledge Forms, to illustrate the critical nature of this issue and ask the children to take it to their home and give it to their parent. Skits are performed in Hindi / English. During the skit we also use property to visualize the problems of e-waste. The programme is in the shape of skit, with local folk artists facing a wide range of experiences. Skits are generally well known and liked by the audience. The content of the programme are based on actual experience. Real-life stories are collected through participatory group discussion (focus groups) at the city level and integrated into the script so that the children can associate with it.
The scripts are composed directly in the Hindi language to ensure it is culturally as well as linguistically acceptable to the children. The programme is tested in order to verify that an appropriate and efficient message is to be conveyed.
Theme of skit: Themes are based upon what are E-waste. The body of script contain the following part
- What is E-waste.
- Why and when E-waste harmful to human being & environment.
- What are the probable solution to combat against E-waste.
- Some suggested solutions are …..REDUCTION, REUSE, RECYCLE.
- RECYCLING must be central among the solutions.
- The concept of donation of E-waste to collection center/dismantler.
Pamphlets was circulated among all the members in school. Fact sheet also gives the locations where E-waste can be donated. Time Duration: Approximately it takes 30 minutes to conduct the skit show with 10 minutes of quiz session. In some schools according to the size of School Hall & Class Room, school permitted us to conduct Awareness Campaign either in morning assembly or in class rooms.
Feedback from the Schools: A Feedback Forms (In questionnaire model) are given to all the School Heads and Teachers and these are collected after one week. During the awareness campaign school heads and teachers generally very positive and accept that the discussion on e-waste has been a new learning for them. Many of the schools have proposed that the collection should not be limited up to solid wastes, e-waste must be included in it. Many of them has allowed us to install the E-waste collection dustbin.
We have carried out our skits in more than 100 schools in Jaipur & Ajmer district of Rajasthan . During our Awareness we call to school authority to include the E-waste issues in EVS program.
