We are thrilled to share that on October 1st, 2024, Dr. Virendra Kumar, Hon. Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment, officially launched "Canary," a groundbreaking indoor navigation application at the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities (PDUNIPPD), New Delhi. This launch marks a significant milestone, making PDUNIPPD the first fully accessible national institute in India for indoor navigation.
Developed by CURE India in collaboration with Maitreyi College (University of Delhi), Canary is an innovative solution aimed at enhancing mobility and independence for individuals with visual impairments and the elderly. Conceptualized by Dr. Mathew Varghese, this app leverages NFC and Bluetooth LE Beacons to offer seamless indoor navigation, enabling users to confidently move through complex spaces.
This pioneering project was brought to life by seven talented Computer Science students from Maitreyi College, under the guidance of Mr. Andrews from CURE India and Dr. Smriti Singh, an Accessibility Consultant. Their passion, creativity, and expertise have demonstrated the immense potential of student-led initiatives in driving social change and promoting accessibility.
During the launch, Dr. Virendra Kumar praised the app and the collaborative effort behind it, highlighting the critical role that technology plays in fostering inclusivity for persons with disabilities. The event showcased how innovation and collaboration between CURE India, Maitreyi College, and the Government can break barriers, creating accessible spaces for all.
The launch of Canary is not just a technological achievement—it symbolizes a new chapter in India's journey towards inclusivity. This initiative is a prime example of how technology can transform lives, empowering individuals with disabilities and ensuring they have access to the same spaces and opportunities as everyone else.
