We are excited to share that on October 1st, 2024, Dr. Virendra Kumar, Hon. Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment, officially launched "Canary," a groundbreaking Indoor Navigation Application at the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities (PDUNIPPD) in New Delhi. This innovative app, developed by CURE India in collaboration with Maitreyi College (University of Delhi), sets a remarkable precedent by making PDUNIPPD the first fully accessible national institute in India for indoor navigation!
Conceptualized by Dr. Mathew Varghese, Canary is designed to empower individuals with visual impairments and the elderly, providing them with enhanced mobility and independence. By utilizing NFC and Bluetooth LE Beacons, it ensures seamless and precise indoor navigation, enabling users to navigate complex spaces with confidence.
This visionary project is the result of the dedication and talent of seven brilliant students from Maitreyi College's Computer Science Department, led by Mr. Andrews from CURE India and Dr. Smriti Singh, an Accessibility Consultant. Their collective effort exemplifies how student-driven innovation can break barriers and drive social progress.
At the launch event, Dr. Virendra Kumar applauded this milestone, underscoring the critical role technology plays in advancing accessibility and inclusivity for persons with disabilities. The collaboration between CURE India, Maitreyi College, and the Government demonstrates the transformative power of innovation in creating lasting change and empowering lives.
The launch of Canary marks a pivotal moment in India’s journey toward inclusivity, highlighting the potential of technology to build accessible environments and improve the quality of life for all individuals.
